Crimes are increasing due to the shortcomings of the police.
Deshbandu Tennakone, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province, said that the lack of an accurate data system with information related to criminals is the main reason for the rise in crime in this country. He mentioned this in a recent news conference held at the Government Information Department on ‘The Role of the Police in Controlling Organized Crime’.
He said that there are many deficiencies in the data system currently available to the police, and that a data system containing the complete biographical details of every person involved in every organized crime committed in the country in the last ten years should be maintained.
He added that the Minister of Public Security and the Inspector General of Police have instructed to implement a special speedy program to fight crime within the next 3 months.
