Cooperative fined for selling rice at higher prices

Ginigathhena Various Services Cooperative Society has been fined five lakh rupees for selling Keri Samba rice at higher prices.

The Nuwara Eliya District Consumer Service Authority had filed a case against Ginigathhena Various Services Cooperative Society before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court under the charge of selling Keri Samba rice at a higher price.

Hatton District Judge and Magistrate M. Faroukdin yesterday (03) ordered to pay a fine of five lakh rupees to the manager of Cop City Supermarket of that society who pleaded guilty to these charges.

According to Amila Ratnayake, officer in charge of the Nuwara Eliya District Customer Service Authority office, the raid was carried out following complaints from customers that Keeri Samba rice was being sold at the society’s Cop City supermarket at a price of Rs 100 higher than the government’s approved price.
