Accordingly, although the National People’s Power has won the power of the Colombo Municipal Council, whose results have now been released, its opposition groups are ahead by a large number of seats. Accordingly, political sources say that there is a possibility of a sharp competition to establish its power.
The National People’s Power, which has 119 seats, won 48 seats in the Colombo Municipal Council. The opposition has won 71 seats, including 29 seats for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, 13 seats for the United National Party, and 5 seats for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
If the number of members elected by a single party or independent group in a local government institution is 50% or more, the Election Commission will notify the relevant party or group to nominate a chairman and vice-chairman.
However, if such power is not obtained, it is stated that the appointment of the chairman or mayor will be done with the agreement of the members of the relevant local government institution without the intervention of the Election Commission.
