CID to go to London to find evidence to implicate Ranil

The Criminal Investigation Department has launched a special operation to ascertain whether the invitation allegedly sent to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe by the University of Wolverhampton in Britain is genuine. Accordingly, the Sunday Times newspaper reports that a five-member team from the department has already gone to the UK.

However, the report states that this team has left for Britain without informing the Attorney General’s Department and that the Attorney General’s advice was not sought for this, the report further states that department sources have confirmed that none of the senior officers of the Attorney General’s Department, including Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris and Deputy Solicitor General Wasantha Perera, were aware of this visit.

The team, headed by a DIG, includes an Assistant Superintendent of Police, a Chief Inspector of Police and two other junior officers, and left for the United Kingdom earlier this week for a five-day visit. The Criminal Investigation Department has reportedly decided to send the team independently without informing the Attorney General’s Department.

The CID team is scheduled to record a statement from former Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Saroja Sirisena tomorrow (17). She was the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Britain during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to England. She is still residing in the country.
