The Elpitiya local council election is scheduled for October 26, 2024, and it has been decided that voters’ left thumbs will be marked with ink. The Election Commission has announced this through a special gazette notification.
According to Section 53a(3) a, b (i) (ii) (iii) of the Local Government Elections Ordinance (262), if a voter does not have a thumb on their left hand, any finger on the right hand will be marked instead.
This decision was made to address the issue arising from the fact that voters’ left hands were marked during the Presidential election held on September 21, 2024.
