CCTV operation to catch drivers violating traffic rules

Acting Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon said that a program to identify drivers who violate traffic laws will be started on January 22 through the CCTV system stationed in Colombo.

He explained that the video evidence of offenses detected by the traffic division’s CCTV system will be forwarded to the police station where they were committed and fines will be issued to the drivers for those offences.

He added that although traffic police officers can detect minimum violations during road duty, CCTV inspection has more than 300% more violations at specific places than essential surveillance.

The program of issuing fine tickets is to be started in Colombo by going to the nearest police station based on the identification of the owner through vehicle number plates.
