The Director General of the Road Development Authority, S.P.M. Suriya Bandara, has suspended 22 cashiers, including the chief cashier, in connection with a multi-crore rupee fraud at the Athurugiriya Interchange Center on the Colombo Outer Ring Road.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the large-scale fraud, which took advantage of the electricity crisis in the country in 2020, was executed by cutting electric wires and disconnecting security cameras when power was available. It was discovered that money was collected from vehicles without issuing receipts. Out of the 27 employees working at the Athurugiriya Interchange Center, 22 have been implicated in the fraud.
