Canada’s Tamil Genocide Memorial Opens Despite Sri Lankan Opposition

A memorial commemorating the victims of the final stages of the country’s war was officially unveiled at Chinguacousy Park in Canada on May 10.

The 4.8-metre-tall stainless steel Tamil Genocide Memorial is set to be approved by Brampton City Council in early 2024.

“This memorial stands as a memorial to the thousands of innocent lives lost in the genocide perpetrated against the Tamil people by the Sri Lankan government… It also serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of Tamil communities around the world…” Canadian Justice Minister Gary Ananda Sangari wrote on his X account.

The Sri Lankan government summoned the Canadian ambassador last year to protest this construction.
