Canada’s interest in human rights in Sri Lanka

The recent arrest of 4 Tamil nationals from the Eastern Province who tried to commemorate the war dead in Sri Lanka has managed to put some pressure on the Sri Lankan diplomatic authorities in Canada.

Accordingly, the foreign media indicates that the allegations related to human rights violations that frequently arise in Canada are likely to be active again.

About 240,000 Tamils of Sri Lankan origin live in Canada, and they are regularly harassed by Canadian authorities in Sri Lanka against alleged human rights abuses during the war.

Sri Lankan diplomats in the country have faced a serious crisis after the latest incident in the Eastern Province was highlighted by Tamil rights activists in Canada.

Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had accused Sri Lanka of genocide. Canada’s Parliament has voted to recognize May 18 as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day in 2022, but Canada’s federal government has confirmed that what happened during the war in Sri Lanka does not amount to genocide.

Last year, when the Canadian Prime Minister made the accusation, the Sri Lankan government strongly opposed it. Foreign Minister Ali Sabri called Canadian High Commissioner Eric Walsh and announced.
