National Transport Commission Chairman Shashi Welgama states that there is no legal provision to increase bus fares just by increasing the price of diesel by 10 rupees.
He further said that according to the existing rules and agreements regarding bus fares, it is not possible to increase the fares at this time, and so far no one has requested to increase the bus fares.
Meanwhile, considering yesterday’s and previous fuel price revisions, the loss incurred by private bus associations on fuel cost is Rs. 22, and since it is unaffordable, a revision of bus fares is essential this time, said Gemunu Wijeratne, President of Ceylon Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA). Thus, he emphasized that the bus fares should be revised in the next two weeks
