Police have denied reports that a new law has been introduced in Arugam Bay banning the wearing of bikinis in public places. The clarification comes after posts on social media claiming that bikinis have been banned in the Arugam Bay area.
The statement reads as follows:
‘‘Welcome to Arugam Bay. We are happy to have you here and truly appreciate your presence. We kindly request that you refrain from wearing bikinis in public places to respect our local culture. Your respect for our traditions means a lot to our community. Thank you for your understanding. We hope you enjoy your time in beautiful Arugam Bay.”
Police denied the claim and said that no such ban is in place. Police said the post was shared by an individual and an investigation has been launched into the matter.
Arugam Bay is a popular tourist destination for surfers, and tourism industry insiders say the bikini ban could damage its appeal if it is implemented.
