Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna founder Basil Rajapaksa said while addressing his party’s parliamentary group yesterday that his party still believes that the general election should be held before the presidential election.
However, he emphasized that President Ranil Wickremesinghe is still in the opposite position. Members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, who hold ministerial positions in the government, stood for the first presidential election.
The next parliamentary election is scheduled to be held in 2025. However, the President has the constitutional power to dissolve Parliament before the appointed time and announce an emergency election.
