Narges Mohammadi, who has been jailed several times for fighting against violence against women and for social reforms in Iran, has won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.
She was awarded the honorary prize today for her efforts to “promote human rights and freedom for all,” according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
“Her courageous struggle was accompanied by enormous personal sacrifices. In total, the regime arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Mohammadi, 51, is a leading human rights activist in Iran who has campaigned for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty.
She is currently serving a 10-year, 9-month sentence in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, accused of actions against national security and propaganda against the state, reports the rights organization Front Line Defenders.
After her victory, she told The New York Times that she would never stop fighting for democracy and equality.
