The American Embassy in Sri Lanka has issued a warning notice to its citizens that a terrorist attack may be launched in the Arugambe area. It has warned Americans to avoid traveling to the area.
In the meantime, the Sri Lanka Police said in a statement that they have taken steps to implement a special security program to ensure the safety of foreign tourists visiting Sri Lanka during the upcoming tourist season.
Considering the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the Sri Lankan police and intelligence agencies have decided to prepare and implement a special security program for the safety of foreign tourists. Police said the program is being implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Public Safety.
Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya will give special instructions to all police stations and the Police Tourism Division will be strengthened. From today, tourists can report any security concerns to the Sri Lanka Police Hotline 1997.
