The United States has drawn attention to the issues raised by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) regarding the alleged human rights violations being carried out by the Sri Lankan Police and the Ministry of Public Security during Operation ‘Yukthiya’.
The American Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Changa, who issued a statement on this, said that she also emphasized the importance of fighting drug trafficking, but that law enforcement operations should be consistent with the principles of the rule of law and due process.
“Striking this balance is critical to maintaining justice and public trust,” she said.
Certain incidents that occurred during Operation Justice have drawn the attention of the Human Rights Commission and the Sri Lanka Bar Association has also expressed serious concern about the operation.
