A press release issued by the New People’s Front is shown here.
The press release
The IGP, who violated the disciplinary code No. 01 and No. 05 of the departmental regulations, should be removed from office immediately.
The New People’s Front has also drawn our attention to the statement made by the IGP regarding the security provided by the IGP to the Kalutara District Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Jagath Withana in response to his request in the face of the death threat and the reasons behind the threats to Jagath Withana.
The IGP stated that such threats have arisen due to the existence of connections with and connections to individuals involved in organized crime and that an open investigation will be conducted in this regard. The IGP further stated that it has been revealed that these death threats have been created not due to public political activities but through association with certain shady businessmen.
Thus, by making defamatory statements about an MP engaged in public service without any investigation and without evidence, his reputation has been severely damaged and the New People’s Front strongly condemns that statement.
According to the disciplinary code of the departmental regulations, it is evident from his statement that the IGP has violated both the “disgraceful behavior” under No. 01 of the B premises and “lying or concealing the truth” under No. 05.
We emphasize that by transferring the powers of the Independent Police Commission to the IGP and issuing statements as he sees fit, the country is being led towards a repressive police state, and having an IGP who acts in accordance with the government’s propaganda plan makes the existence of an independent police questionable.
We strongly condemn such media spectacles in the democratic political process, and the New People’s Front strongly condemns the statement made by the IGP on the issue of the security of Samagi Jana Bala Vega MP Jagath Withana as part of the repressive political process of the government that is suppressing the real issues of the country and acting according to a narrow political agenda. We have urged the government to take legal action against the IGP for violating the disciplinary code and to remove him from the post of IGP.
