A newborn baby has been found abandoned in a paddy field in the Paragahadeniya Sinhapura Road area of Mawathagama, Kurunegala.
A villager who was walking through the paddy field this morning had seen the newborn baby lying under a tree in the paddy field.
He later took steps to inform the Mawathagama police regarding the incident. Accordingly, the police officers who arrived there and the residents of the area together took the baby from the spot and admitted it to the Mawathagama Hospital.
A doctor who examined the baby said that it must have been about a day or two since the baby was born.
After initial examinations, the Mawathagama Hospital authorities took steps to transfer the baby to the premature infant unit of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
It is not yet known who abandoned the baby at this location, but a hospital spokesperson said the baby is in good health.
