A lady doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital was raped in her official residence, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said in Parliament today (11). The suspect involved in the incident has reportedly been identified as a deserter from the army.
Addressing the House, the Minister stated that five police teams have been deployed to find and arrest the suspect.
The incident, which took place on Monday (10) night, has sparked outrage and doctors at the hospital have launched a strike demanding speedy justice.
The 32-year-old female doctor had gone to her government-provided dormitory for doctors after completing her duties yesterday (10).
It is reported that an unknown person came between 6:30 and 7 pm, threatened her with a knife and raped her.
