America has decided to build a temporary port off the coast of Gaza. The BBC website reports that the support ship named General Frank S. Besson, carrying the necessary equipment, left the state of Virginia yesterday (Saturday).
President Joe Biden had previously said that the rapid construction of a temporary port would allow the US to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip more quickly by sea.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned that famine in Gaza is canot be stop and that children are dying of starvation. Aid delivered by land has been hijacked on numerous occasions and air delivery has proven difficult and dangerous.
Last Friday, a parachute dropped with food parcels failed to open properly, killing five people and forcing them to reconsider dropping food from the air, a spokesperson for the World Food Program told the website.
The Pentagon has said that 1,000 military personnel are working together to establish a temporary port to provide “essential humanitarian supplies” to the Gaza Strip, and that the floating port could be completed in 60 days. However, humanitarian workers say that the children suffering from famine in Gaza cannot wait for two months.
Meanwhile, an aid ship loaded with 200 tons of food is scheduled to leave Cyprus this morning, according to the report.
