President Ranil Wickramasinghe said that Sri Lanka’s economy, which had suffered a serious setback for several years, started to revive from the third quarter of 2023, and international financial organizations have predicted that an economic growth of nearly 3% can be achieved in 2024.
In a special statement in Parliament today (06), the President mentioned that although various parties have brought various criticisms on economic measures including tax collection, there was no other option but those measures in the existing situation.
The President said that the international community has accepted that Sri Lanka’s economy has reached a stable state, and some people are accusing that even though the economy seems to be strong, it does not show that the people do not feel it.
“People are accused of being taxed unnecessarily, electricity bills and fuel rates have been raised more than necessary, but we started from the point where Sri Lanka’s economy fell to zero,” said the President.
He emphasized that in 2023 compared to the year 2022, the government revenue could be increased by more than 50%, and last year it was possible to get a surplus in the primary account.
