2500 teachers to teach English

Cabinet spokesperson Minister Bandula Gunawardena announced that the Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 2500 English teachers. This recruitment will be conducted under the English for All program.

Addressing the weekly meeting to inform Cabinet decisions, he stated that 4,441 English teachers have been approved for schools to teach GCE General Level (GEO) subjects in English. Consequently, there is a requirement for 6500 English teachers.

Accordingly, Minister Gunawardena noted that the current number of schools teaching in the English medium is 765, and the government aims to increase it to 1000 this year. He also mentioned that the Cabinet approved an increase in the number of English teachers to 6500.
