Around 25 individuals who were arrested by the Dehiwala and Kohuwala police on charges of possessing drugs such as heroin and ‘ice’ and later remanded have been released by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.
The group was released after the Government Analyst’s reports revealed that the substances in their possession were not drugs.
One of the individuals who was released committed suicide after becoming depressed due to the problems his family faced after his arrest.
Attorney Geethma Fernando, who appeared before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court on behalf of the victim, accused the police of making absurd allegations against his client for possessing drugs.
The police did not respond to the allegation.
It has also been revealed that many suspects who were later acquitted and released based on the reports of the Government Analyst had spent up to nine months in remand prison.
