20,000 Child Abuse Cases Before the Court

It was revealed in Parliament yesterday that approximately 20,075 cases pending in Sri Lankan courts are related to child abuse.

As of July 31 last year, there were 7,495 child abuse cases in Sri Lanka’s high courts and 12,580 child abuse cases in magistrate courts. Additionally, as of April 30 this year, the National Child Protection Authority has received 2,751 child abuse complaints.

The National Child Protection Authority received 11,187 complaints in 2021, 10,497 complaints in 2022, 9,436 complaints in 2023, and 2,571 complaints by April 30, 2024. This totals 33,871 child abuse complaints from 2021 to April 30, 2024.

Member of Parliament Mr. Dallas Alahapperuma mentioned this while delivering the responses provided by the Minister of State for Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs. Geetha Kumarasinghe, to a question raised in Parliament yesterday (14th).

Meanwhile, from 2018 to 2022, 6,587 girls and 1,694 boys have been subjected to sexual abuse due to child abuse, according to State Minister Geetha Kumarasinghe.
