20% of the population does not have drinking water

According to a survey conducted by the Census and Statistics Department, it has been revealed that 20.3% of the household population in this country do not have basic drinking water facilities.

It is also said that unsafe wells are the main source of drinking water for 16.1% of the domestic population in this country.

According to a survey conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics regarding the drinking water used by the people of Sri Lanka, it has been revealed that approximately one third of the domestic population can safely get drinking water service in their premises.

The survey revealed that two-thirds of the urban population and one-fourth of the rural population use safe drinking water, while only 3.1% of the estate population uses safe drinking water.

Also, it is reported that more than 70% of the domestic population in this country use improved sources of drinking water in their premises.

Meanwhile, 6.3% of the Sri Lankan population do not use basic sanitation services and 0.1% of the household population defecate in the open.

It is said that the survey conducted by the Census and Statistics Department further revealed that 84.9% of the household population in Sri Lanka use water-sealed toilets.
