Ambassadors’ opposition to sending troops to the Red Sea

The ambassadors of West Asian countries in Sri Lanka have expressed their displeasure regarding Sri Lanka’s decision to deploy a Sri Lanka Navy ship in the naval operation implemented by countries led by the United States to suppress the attacks of the Houthi terrorists operating by obstructing the maritime traffic in the Red Sea. They recently met President Ranil Wickremesinghe and expressed their displeasure as follows.

They pointed out that this is an unnecessary intervention as Sri Lanka does not have such an agreement with Israel even though the United States and the United Kingdom are involved in such an action in accordance with the security agreements with Israel.

They said that they would accept their countries for freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, and that Israel should also respect it. They also request President Ranil Wickremesinghe not to involve Sri Lankans in resettlement activities in the area occupied by Israel.

Sri Lanka maintains a non-aligned military posture with any specific country but deploys the navy ship to ensure freedom of navigation red sea, the president said.
