Canada’s Anne Carson wins the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Swedish Academy announced on Thursday that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson for her “bold and innovative creative work that crafts new forms for contemporary literature while engaging in a playful dialogue with the classical tradition.”

Carson, who holds Icelandic citizenship (having acquired it in 2022) and was residing in Iceland at the time of the announcement, receives a prize valued at 12 million Swedish kronor (US$1.2 million).

Literary critics note that a key reason for this award is the nature of Carson’s work, which defies confinement to traditional literary genres by frequently blending poetry, prose, dialogue, and translation. Widely acclaimed for her translations of classical Greek literature, she also engages in innovative storytelling.
