Police Media Spokesperson Mr. F.U. Wutler stated to the media that no action can be taken regarding Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero until the Supreme Court verdict is received by the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The Supreme Court recently ruled that the presidential pardon granted in 2019 by former President Maithripala Sirisena to Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena organization, who had been sentenced to imprisonment for contempt of court is invalid.
The relevant fundamental rights petitions were filed by Sandhya Ekneligoda, the wife of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, and the Centre for Policy Alternatives.
