Five Killed in Road Accidents Across the Island

Police report that five people lost their lives in road accidents across several areas of the island yesterday. These accidents were reported within the Kirinda, Habarana, Anuradhapura, Medawachchiya, and Hakmana police divisions.

In one incident early yesterday morning, a motorcycle traveling towards Kirinda veered off the road after the rider lost control in the Vilamulla area along the Kirinda-Tissamaharama road. One person died after being admitted to Debarawewa Hospital following an accident in which the rider and another individual sustained serious injuries. The deceased has been identified as a resident of the Kekirawa area. The other injured person was transferred to Hambantota Hospital for treatment.

In the Habarana police area, an accident occurred on the Habarana-Kantale road in the Aluth-oya area when a car, having gone out of the driver’s control, collided with a lorry approaching from the opposite direction. The driver of the car and a female passenger sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Kantale Hospital; the woman subsequently passed away.

In the Anuradhapura police area, on the Anuradhapura-Rambewa road in the Saliyapura area, a motorcyclist died after colliding with a bus he was attempting to overtake; the rider was run over by the same bus.

In the Medawachchiya police area, a woman died after the car she was traveling in which was heading towards Medawachchiya veered off the road and overturned into a canal in the Kirigalwewa area. A motorcyclist who sustained serious injuries after his vehicle skidded off the Hakmana-Karatota road near the Karatota area and crashed into an electricity pole while traveling towards Hakmana, has died after being admitted to Tangalle Hospital.
