On the issue of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, the government should reconsider the constitutional amendment by respecting the advice and counsel of the three-denominational Mahanayake Theros, says Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. Addressing a public meeting held today, he said,
It is more appropriate to take into account the facts expressed by the Mahanayake Theros regarding issues such as independence, security of democracy, people’s sovereignty, and people’s sovereignty. The Opposition Leader also said that the government should be humble enough to pay attention to the advice and counsel of the Mahanayake Theros.
“When the Mahanayake Theros present facts and issues, they should be humble and accept those ideas without being arrogant. Just as we bow down before the Mahanayake Theros, it should be the responsibility of any government to act with due respect to the proposals preached by the venerable Maha Sangha.
It is not appropriate to respect the Mahanayake Theros only for the sake of the media. Listening to their advice is not disrespectful. Because the teachings and sermons of the Mahanayake Theros are examined in the fullest sense of the word. It is not shameful for the government to take a step back on this issue,” said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
