Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Ratnayake said that steps will be taken to introduce a special lane for motorcycles on the country’s main roads, and that the inaugural phase will begin from the town of Kalawanchikudy.
The Minister stated that this special lane will be introduced to minimize the majority of road accidents that occur in the country annually, as motorcycle accidents account for the majority of them.
“On average, about 2,500 people die in road accidents in Sri Lanka every year. In 2025, 2,750 people died. In 2019, we had 1,400 deaths from both front and rear-end motorcycle accidents. If we want to reduce road accidents and deaths in Sri Lanka, we need to solve the problem of motorcycle use. We are setting aside a lane for motorcycles on the main road in Kalawanchikudy for the first time in Sri Lanka. We are building it with breakers instead of white lines. Because there are a few more motorcycles on that side.”
