Prisoners’ demands granted. Negombo Prison calms down.

The clash between two groups of inmates at the Negombo Prison has been quelled, said Prisons Media Spokesperson and Prisons Commissioner A.C. Gajanayake. He further said that 36 inmates have been injured and hospitalized in the clash, two of whom have died.

He said that the Prisons Commissioner has appointed a special investigation team to investigate the incident and that certain demands of the inmates and detainees are also to be granted.

“As of today, 2,417 inmates are being held in the Negombo Prison. The prison officials have intervened and the situation inside has now been completely resolved. The prison inmates also provided assistance to control the situation. In addition, the police, the Special Task Force and the army were also involved to strengthen security outside the prison,” the prison media spokesperson said.
