The Prime Minister informs Parliament that the Provincial Council elections are not possible.

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said that it is not possible to hold the Provincial Council elections under the current preferential (proportional) representation system.

The Prime Minister said that adequate representation of women and youth in the Provincial Councils should be ensured and the existing electoral system should be amended for this. She said that holding an election without doing so would be a futile exercise and said that the Provincial Council elections will be held only after the introduction of a new electoral system.

She said this in response to a question raised in Parliament by Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake.
