Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga has shown remarkable skill at the ‘Diamond League’ athletics tournament held in Rome, Italy. He managed to throw the javelin for a distance of 92.62 meters in the tournament, which is also a new tournament record. The feat is also recorded as the world’s best javelin thrower of 2026.
He broke the competition record set 20 years ago, in 2006, by Norwegian athlete Andreas Thorkildsen with a throw of 90.34 meters.
Rulesh Tharanga is also the first athlete in the history of Sri Lankan athletics to throw a javelin over 90 meters. This is also reported to be the second best performance by an Asian athlete in the javelin throw event.
