Warrants have been issued by the Colombo Fort and Matara Magistrate’s Courts to arrest and produce former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, who is evading court dates.
The warrants were issued after the suspect failed to appear in court when two cases filed by the CID and FCID were called on charges of purchasing a land worth millions of rupees on the Matara Eliyakanda Road with illicit funds and printing election campaign T-shirts at the Tourism Promotion Bureau in 2014 at a cost of Rs. 7.8 million.
The President’s Counsel, who appeared for suspect Basil Rajapaksa during the hearings, informed the court that his client is seriously ill and abroad. He also said that no airline is willing to take on the risk of bringing him back.
