Ranil and Saman Ekanayake to be indicted

Additional Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris informed the court that indictments will be filed against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake for misappropriation of public funds. He stated this when the case filed against the former President was taken up before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today.

Additional Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris, who appeared for the prosecution, informed the court that action will be taken on July 8th.

Deputy Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris further stated that they are studying whether to name Maithri Wickremesinghe, the wife of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as a suspect in the complaint.

Magistrate Isuru Netthikumara ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to promptly complete the investigations into the allegations against the suspects and to take steps to file indictments against the suspects if there is sufficient evidence.

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe did not appear in court today (29), and President’s Counsel Tilak Marapana, presenting evidence on his behalf, stated that he would not appear in court today due to his client’s illness. Former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake, who is currently out on bail, appeared in court today.

The case is scheduled to be taken up again on July 8.
