Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Ajith P. Perera says that corruption and decline in cricket cannot be stopped unless the system of appointing officials through the voting power of sports clubs is changed.
Criticizing the people who have been administering the cricket institution for 15-20 years, the MP said that if there are corrupt or incompetent officials, they should be compensated or removed.
An independent governance structure should be established in which scholars who have reached the top of the sport can participate voluntarily, without political interference, and that there is a private member’s bill prepared on the recommendations of Justice K.T. Chitrasiri, through which the cricket institution can be put into a new structure in a short period of one and a half months.
Ajith P. Perera also said that he appreciates the President’s efforts to bring about a change in cricket administration and that he is ready to provide the necessary legal and professional guidance for that. Commenting on Eran Wickramaratne, who is set to be the chairman of a new interim management committee, if appointed, he said that Eran Wickramaratne is a very talented player with experience playing at Royal College Colombo and England, and that he will be able to manage cricket well.
He said this while speaking on a Rupavahini program.
