Sand miners clean the Mahaweli River.

A program to clean the Mahaweli River began last Saturday in Nawayalathena. The Polgolla Reservoir Sand Mining Licensees Association and the Katugastota Police Environment Division jointly organized the program.

The cleanliness program was launched centered around the Polgolla Reservoir, which is heavily polluted due to solid waste such as polythene and plastic. After removing the waste from the riverbank and the center of the reservoir, trees were also planted on the riverbank.

Kandy Additional District Secretary Lalith Atampawala, Kandy Municipal Commissioner Indika Abeysinghe, Polgolla Mahaweli Dam Engineer-in-Charge Thisara Bandara, Katugastota Police OIC R.C. Rajapaksa and members of the Polgolla Reservoir Sand Mining Licensees Association also participated in this program.
