Sectoral Oversight Committee agrees to abolish MPs’ pensions.

The draft bill to abolish MPs’ pensions has been approved by the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Public Administration, Justice and Civil Protection.

Its chairman, MP Najith Indika, said that the bill was unanimously passed by the same committee. Commenting further on this, he said:

“The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Public Administration, Justice and Civil Protection unanimously approved the bill on the abolition of MPs’ pensions. One of the points we presented in the Rich Country, Beautiful Life policy statement is that the pensions received by MPs who have been in Parliament for the past few years will be abolished. The current Parliamentarians’ Pensions Act No. 1 of 1977 will be abolished through this new bill. After this is passed in Parliament next week. MPs will not be entitled to a pension.”
