The Paris Court of Appeal has ordered the release of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy from prison subject to several conditions.
He will be released from prison on Monday (10), according to foreign media.
According to the appeals court ruling, Sarkozy has been banned from leaving French territory. He has also been ordered to be placed under judicial supervision and will be prohibited from dealing with key figures in the case, including co-defendants and witnesses, the court said.
He had been imprisoned since his conviction on September 25. However, he denies the charges against him. During the trial, speaking from prison via video conference, Sarkozy has argued that he has always met all the requirements of justice.
“I never thought I would be in prison at the age of 70. It is very difficult, I will never admit to something I did not do,” he said. Sarkozy also told the court that he had never asked former Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi for any money.
The former French president was sentenced to five years in prison on Wednesday for conspiring to illegally obtain millions of euros in funds from Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy, 70, was president of France from 2007 to 2012.
