Court rules that police violated journalist’s fundamental rights

The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that three Alawwa Police officers violated journalist Thilina Rajapaksa’s fundamental human rights by scolding, assaulting and subjecting him to inhuman treatment.

The Supreme Court Judge Priyantha Fernando, with the concurrence of Chief Justice Prithipadman Surasena and Justice Sampath Abhayakoon, delivered this judgment after hearing a fundamental rights petition filed by Thilina Rajapaksa yesterday (22).

The Supreme Court ordered the defendant police officers, namely Ravindra Kumara, B.M.S.S. Wijaya Bandara, and Police Constable Jayasundara, who were then sergeants of the Alawwa Police, who were convicted of violating fundamental rights, to pay a total of Rs. 75,000 to the petitioner, at the rate of Rs. 25,000 each, from their personal funds.

In addition, the Supreme Court ordered the Attorney General to conduct a criminal investigation into the actions of those police officers and investigate the possibility of filing charges.
