Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake emphasizes that there is currently no law in the country to conduct Provincial Council elections. He points out that after the repeal of the law that was valid for that purpose, the new set of laws that were being prepared in its place has been stalled since 2018.
Since the full responsibility for this lies with the legislature, the legislature must take a decision on it immediately, the Elections Commissioner General added.
Delimitation was also an integral part of the 50:50 mixed proportional representation system presented in 2018. After its work was completed and presented to Parliament, the entire Parliament, including the Minister in charge of the subject, opposed it.
Thereafter, a committee of the Prime Minister of Parliament was appointed to resolve it, and then another committee was appointed including former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya. However, its work was disrupted by the subsequent dissolution of Parliament.
