Anuradhapura Magistrate Nalaka Sanjeewa Jayasuriya has ordered the release on bail of a former army soldier who was arrested on suspicion of raping a female trainee specialist doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The suspect arrested in connection with the incident was remanded for nearly seven months.
The former army soldier named K. B. Madhuranga Ratnayake, a resident of D Thun, Ela Road, Galnewa, was released on strict bail conditions.
The court ordered the suspect to be released on two sureties of Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 500,000 each. In addition, the Magistrate ordered that one of the sureties should be a close family relative of the suspect.
Although the suspect was granted bail in connection with this corruption incident, he remains in custody due to another incident involving his possession of a live hand grenade.
