The Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs has taken steps to establish a Buddha Sasana Council to suppress individuals and groups that spread ideologies and activities that distort Buddhism.
The ‘Establishment of the Buddha Sasana Council’, spearheaded by the Chief Prelates of all three Buddhist Chapters, was held at the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs yesterday (01) under the patronage of the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi.
The aim of this is to implement a program that aligns the Buddhist religious society and the state administration in line with the expectations of the people.
The committee comprises the Chief Prelates of 31 chapters belonging to the Siam, Amarapura and Ramanna sects, which have overall responsibility for the Buddhist community in Sri Lanka, and four prelates appointed by the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, and a lay representative.
The other lay members of this council, which is convened by the Minister and Deputy Minister in charge of the subject, are the Secretary to the Ministry, the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs, the two private secretaries to the Minister and Deputy Minister, and the two coordinating secretaries to the Minister and Deputy Minister.
