Three-party Maha Nayaka theros have written a letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressing their opposition to the introduction of short-sighted laws that are causing social degradation and the state machinery’s efforts to promote immoral homosexual behavior.
The Theros say that if the state rulers try to act without regard to a country’s cultural identity, historical heritage and traditional teachings, it will turn the state into anarchy and lead to the collapse of the entire society.
The letter states that the current government’s proposed amendment to Section 82 of the Penal Code to make corporal punishment an offence, as well as the Tourism Development Authority’s support for the promotion of the tourism sector based on homosexuality, are causing such serious moral anarchy and a number of social crises, the Mahanayake Theros have said.
This letter has been sent to the President with the signatures of the Mahanayake Theros of the Malwatta Chapter, Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala, the Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana, the Mahanayake of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya, Most Venerable Karagoda Uyangoda Maithri Murthi, the Mahanayake of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya, Most Venerable Makulewe Wimala.
