Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says that farmers will not receive any relief or benefit from the taxes imposed on potatoes and onions.
He points out that he will question the government whether a potato tax fraud similar to the sugar tax fraud has occurred.
He further stated that although the purpose of imposing the tax was to protect local B onion growers, a large stock of B onions had been imported into the country and stored before the tax was imposed.
Also, the Opposition Leader says that not providing tax relief to farmers at the time they need it is a matter of government incompetence, and the entire farming community has been affected as a result.
These facts were revealed while participating in the “Villages to Villages – Doors to Doors” Opposition Leader Mobile Service Program and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Membership Promotion Program centered around the Minneriya electorate.
