Handunnetti says Sri Lanka won the Nobel Prize for tea

Industry Minister Sunil Handunnetti says that Sri Lanka won the Nobel Prize at a tea exhibition held in Japan. He said that a kilo of Sri Lankan tea costs around eight hundred dollars, which is equivalent to two hundred and seventy-five thousand Sri Lankan rupees.

Expressing his views further, he said that the high price received for Sri Lankan tea in Japan is a Guinness record. He said that this situation is an example that even today the world recognizes the high quality of Sri Lankan tea. Therefore, he said that providing quality tea products that meet the demand will be taken up as a challenge. He expressed these views while addressing the media after participating in a program held there.

The Nobel Prize is an award that targets those who make outstanding contributions to various fields. It was established by Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, in his last will and testament.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to individuals as well as organizations, while all other prizes are awarded to individuals. In cases where there is more than one deserving recipient, it can be divided among a maximum of three people. The prize is awarded annually on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. It was first established in 1901.

The Nobel Prize consists of a gold medal, a certificate and a large sum of money. The amount is determined by the contribution received by the Nobel Foundation. Several Sri Lankans have been nominated for this prize, but have not won it.

According to Minister Sunil Handunnetti, the Nobel Prize is not awarded for consumer goods such as tea, and it is not awarded by Japan.
