The National Council for Road Safety says that from January 1st next year, all vehicles travelling on expressways must wear seat belts.

A three-month grace period will be given to vehicles manufactured without seat belts, said National Council for Road Safety Chairman Manjula Kulatunga.

About 88% of passengers have requested that this seat belt law be implemented for intercity bus services as well.

The National Council for Road Safety said that there are plans to make seat belts mandatory for long-distance bus services as well.

Seat belts have already been implemented for passengers travelling on expressways from this month 1st.
