During the trade talks between Sri Lanka and the United States, a proposal has reportedly been made to provide duty-free access to American-made vehicles.
The main reason for this proposal is reportedly that the trade balance between the two countries is largely in favor of Sri Lanka. During these talks, the 44% tariff imposed on Sri Lanka by US President Donald Trump was reduced to 20% in two stages, and the opposition is questioning whether there are any effective agreements for this.
If the proposal is implemented, high-quality electric vehicles manufactured in the United States, including Tesla, will be able to enter the Sri Lankan market duty-free.
Tesla is a pioneer in electric vehicle technology, and their models such as the Model 3, Model Y, and Model S have already gained great popularity around the world. In addition, it is reported that American cars such as Ford, Chevrolet and Jeep, which were very popular in Sri Lanka some time ago, will also easily enter the local market.
American vehicles with advanced technology and safety features have been excluded from the Sri Lankan market due to high taxes. If there is a tariff concession, Sri Lankan consumers will be able to obtain such advanced vehicles at a reasonable price.
However, Sri Lanka has not yet approved this proposal from the American side. However, political sources say that the proposals will be considered step by step.
