Eight people, including two ministers, die in helicopter crash

Eight people, including Defense Minister Edward Omane Boma and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Brahim Murtala Muhammed, have died in a military helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti region.

The Ghana Armed Forces said the Z9 helicopter, which was carrying three crew members and five passengers, “went off radar.”

Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash, and photos purportedly of the burnt-out helicopter are circulating on social media.

Environment Minister Brahim Murtala, who died in the crash, was an active campaigner against large-scale mining. Foreign media say that this plane crash was likely because there were threats against him from drug traffickers and several multinational corporations.
