Court agrees to close Ghota’s case

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s lawyers informed the Supreme Court today (30) that they are ready to give evidence in the ‘habeas corpus case’ filed by their relatives at the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court against two human rights activists, Lalith Weeraraj and Kugan Murganandan.

President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, who appeared for former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, informed the court of this when an appeal petition related to this matter was taken up before the Supreme Court today.

However, the lawyer informed the court that it is difficult for his client to give evidence before the Jaffna Court due to existing security reasons and that he is ready to do so in a Colombo Court.

The three-judge Supreme Court bench instructed President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva to submit this request to the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court within four weeks from today and take steps to obtain appropriate orders.

The President’s Counsel requested the court to conclude the hearing of this case as his client is ready to testify before the court, and Attorney Nuwan Bopage, who appeared on behalf of the petitioners and the missing persons, expressed his agreement to this.

Accordingly, the court decided to conclude the hearing of the appeal petition.
